Today is the day we celebrate fatherhood. So, Happy Father's Day to all you dad's out there. Thanks for being awesome. You can't be quite as awesome as my dad, but that's understandable--he's the incredible Michael T. Powers. Who's gonna be able to go up against that?
Today I have the honor and privilege of getting to do one of my favorite things with my dad--ministry. We get to go to Faith Evansville, a sister church to my home church in Janesville, and my dad is speaking and I am leading worship. We've done this sort of thing many times, going to different places and doing ministry together, and I've come to cherish those moments that I get to spend with my dad, just him and me. Often I will sing a special song that ties in with his message, which I'll also be doing today.
Today is a day where I put aside my own petty problems and focus on honoring fatherhood--more specifically, my father, and the incredible amount of time and effort he has put in over the years to raise my brothers and me. There is nothing worthy enough I could ever do to pay that time back to him, except to try as hard as I can to pass down the same legacy to my own children someday.
Today is a day to not worry about work. Or projects. Or anything else that might be filling my mind. Instead, I'm going to remember that it's Father's Day, and that means I need to give my dad a hug and tell him how much he means to me.
Today is not a day to talk about the decline of good fatherhood in America. It's not a day to talk about the state of the family unit or anything else like that. It's not a day to start looking down at any fathers who may not have given their all for their kids.
Today is a day to go up to your dad and love on him, if you have the privilege of still having your dad in this world with you. Who cares if you've had a crappy relationship in the past? Who cares if you have your own problems and don't feel like you have the time to go honor your dad? Just do it.
Today is a day to love on dads. Today is a day to inspire them. Today is a day to show them how much you care and to make them feel like the most special thing in the world.
Today is Father's Day.
